Tian’anmen Square

Tian’anmen Square, Beijing

Tian’anmen Square sits at the heart of Beijing’s central axis and remains one of the most symbolically significant public spaces in modern Chinese history. Its vast, open expanse creates a sense of scale that feels almost architectural in itself. From the early morning flag-raising to the solemn lines of monumental buildings surrounding the square, the space reflects where national memory and contemporary life intersect.

Around the square stand several of China’s most recognisable landmarks, including the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, and the National Museum. Together, they form a stage for political, cultural, and civic expression. For photographers, the square offers a distinctive visual language: broad horizons, strong symmetry, and light that shifts dramatically across the course of the day.
